Tomorrow Energy secures irrevocable permit for 46 MW / 184 MWh battery storage project in Eemshaven

Eemshaven, 25 August 2026 – Tomorrow Energy has reached a major milestone in the development of Holland Battery 2, its large-scale battery energy storage project in Eemshaven. The permit for the project is now irrevocable, marking an important step towards the realization of the project.

Holland Battery 2 is being developed as a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 46 MW and an energy storage capacity of 184 MWh. This means the system will be able to store or discharge electricity at full capacity for up to four hours.


Strategic location in Eemshaven

The project will be developed in Eemshaven, one of the Netherlands’ most important energy hubs. The region plays a central role in the Dutch energy transition due to the presence and continued development of wind energy, solar energy, electricity infrastructure, industry and large-scale energy storage.

Battery storage is becoming increasingly important within the energy system. By storing electricity when large amounts of renewable energy are available and making it available again at other times, battery systems can contribute to a more flexible and stable electricity system.


Holland Battery 2 is designed to contribute to, among other things:

  • better integration of wind and solar power;

  • providing flexibility to the electricity system;

  • supporting the balance between electricity generation and consumption;

  • making more efficient use of available energy infrastructure; and

  • further strengthening Eemshaven as a strategic Dutch energy hub.


Important step towards realization

With the permit now being irrevocable, an important development phase has been successfully completed. This allows Tomorrow Energy to further focus on the technical, commercial and financial preparation for the realization of Holland Battery 2.

Tomorrow Energy sees energy storage as an essential part of the future energy system. The strong growth of renewable electricity generation is making flexibility increasingly important. Large-scale battery systems can respond quickly to changes in supply and demand, thereby forming an important link between renewable generation, the electricity grid and energy users.
